2024 Winter Conference: A Gathering of Bison Enthusiasts

The Eastern Bison Association (EBA) held its highly anticipated 2024 Winter Conference at the Red Lion Hotel in Harrisburg-Hershey, Pennsylvania, this past March. The event proved to be a resounding success, bringing together bison enthusiasts and professionals from across the region for a weekend of learning, networking, and celebrating the majestic Eastern Bison.

The informative program featured a lineup of industry leaders, providing valuable insights and practical knowledge for bison producers. Lydia Whitman, Program Manager for the National Bison Association (NBA), kicked things off with a comprehensive NBA update, keeping attendees abreast of the latest trends and developments in the bison world.

Sharing practical wisdom for navigating the harsh winter months, Kevin Swope of Heritage Lane Farm presented a session titled "Winter Management: Surviving the Season with Your Pastures Intact." This session offered attendees valuable strategies to ensure the well-being of their bison herds during winter.

Recognizing the importance of mental well-being for bison producers, Dr. Ivette Ruiz delivered a thought-provoking presentation on "Avoiding Burnout and Managing Stress." Her insights provided much-needed tools and strategies for those working diligently in the bison industry.

The educational program delved deeper into critical bison health topics. Dr. Katie VanValin's presentation on "Elevating Your Farm's Mineral Program" offered valuable information on optimizing nutritional plans for bison herds.

Finally, Dr. Dan Kniffen presented "Pinkeye and Points to Ponder," equipping attendees with the knowledge to diagnose and manage this common bovine ailment effectively.

Stacy Nofziger, a dedicated researcher and former board member, discussed her Mineral Study Opportunity.

Finally, Liz Riffle, an expert in value-added bison products, shared her knowledge on "Value Adding with Bison Products," highlighting innovative ways to diversify and expand bison businesses.

A Celebration of Bison Excellence: The Show and Sale

The pinnacle of the EBA Winter Conference was the Show and Sale, held at the Pennsylvania Farm Show Complex and Expo Center. This exciting event showcased top-quality Eastern Bison carcasses and live animals, attracting breeders, producers, and potential buyers.

The sale featured a diverse selection of bison for every purpose, including calves with exceptional potential, mature breeding females, and even show animals. This wide range of offerings ensured something for everyone, and the energy was exhilarating - even from the children!
